Has the Correction Factor got the X Factor?

I was recently contacted by a new partner joining a practice – a rare event these days – who wanted to know what the Correction Factor is, and how it relates to the MPIG.  Apparently she asked her partners for an explanation and they suggested she talked to the accountant. Within days of this call, I also took a phone call from a journalist wanting my comments on the plans for the withdrawal of the Correction Factor and the replacement for all GPs with a single contract.

Accountants are sometime described as inventive and creative, as well as the usual comments concerning dark corners and parties. However, as an experience this week shows, some playing with figures is needed to ensure a new partner gets what she was expecting.

The NHS: a dysfunctional family?

GPs are part of the NHS Family, which bring to mind images of contented parents and children sitting in a warm room by the open fire listening to the Queens Christmas message. But what happens when it goes wrong?

Dr GY came to see me this week, in a state of frustration. Back in 2006 Dr GY had a notification suggesting he had been overpaid by his PCT, but no explanation offered.
